Burning Blood – Forest Of The Damned

I don’t really have a proper term for this sort of thing, but I guess an approximation is to call it a ‘community release’.  ‘Forest Of The Damned’ is a demo really made for the tightly-knit Virginia/Illinois black metal scene based around bands like Raw Hatred and Tjolgtjar.  You could call it an inside joke, but it’s not really a joke; it’s something made for circulation within that community, and in all honesty, it isn’t really meant for anyone else.  A copy winging its way down to Florida could be easily construed as an error.

Musically, it doesn’t really appeal to me.  Musically, it’s not really supposed to appeal to anyone.  It’s bedroom black metal with a rickety drum machine, distorted vocals, and mostly random and often sketchily-played tremolo riffing.  Production’s bad and thin.  The songs aren’t very well written.  But when you get down to it, this demo is about the community, not the music.  It’s music for the people who will like this not for what it contains, but the spirit of its release; the idea of getting involved with the local metal scene just because they love it.  The people selling their demos for $2 at shows that draw 30 people are selling THIS demo.  This is what the most underground and smallest-scale heavy metal is.  It’s not like you can criticize it for being made, as bad as you may think it is; there’s only 66 copies of it floating around and they weren’t made for you anyway.  In fact, I think that The Goat Christ already knew 50 people that would get a copy right off the bat, and the other 16 are just to make the numbering amusing.  I don’t like it, but it’s essentially beyond any sort of critical judgment, so take from that what you will.
